Newsom Backs Greuel to Succeed Waxman

The Los Angeles Times reports that former L.A. mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel has lined up an important endorsement in the race to succeed retiring Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) in California’s 33rd congressional district. Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, who was previously the mayor of San Francisco and one of the Democratic Party’s most well-known leaders statewide, has come out in favor of Greuel in the June 3 primary.

Greuel appears to be courting senior party leaders in an attempt to put some distance between herself and a very crowded primary field. Under California’s relatively new “jungle primary” system, all candidates from all parties compete in the same primary. In some recent local races, only one Democrat has made the final round, despite the party’s overall support. Several are already running in the 33rd. The filing deadline is March 12.
