President Obama announced the rollout of a new government website on Wednesday that is designed to collect and monitor the enormous amount of climate change data housed at different federal agencies. Obama is fulfilling a promise he made last June to use his executive authority to fight global warming since congress has failed to take effective action.
In a joint statement from the White house delivered by John Podesta, a counselor to the president, and John P. Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, they said:
By taking the enormous data sets regularly collected by NASA, NOAA, and other agencies and applying the ingenuity, creativity, and expertise of technologists and entrepreneurs, the Climate Data Initiative will help create easy-to-use tools for regional planners, farmers, hospitals, and businesses across the country–and empower America’s communities to prepare themselves for the future.
In September, Obama directed the Environmental Protection Agency to propose rules to cut greenhouse gas emissions from new power plants. Moreover, Obama has also directed the Transportation Department to work with the EPA to create more restrictive fuel economy standards for certain types of trucks. The new regulations are to be transitioned this year and in 2015.
Soon, the President will be asking congress for $1 Billion in his upcoming 2015 budget to finance research and build infrastructure to help America combat the extreme weather that is driven by global warming.
