WH Senior Adviser: 'Foolish' to Discount Impeachment After Obama Enacts Exec Amnesty

White House Senior Adviser Dan Pfeiffer said the Obama administration is still worried that House Republicans will begin impeachment proceedings if Obama gives executive amnesty and work permits to millions of illegal immigrants in contravention of federal law.

On ABC’s This Week, Pfeiffer, who had previously said something similar at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast, was asked why he still believed that after House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said the House would not impeach Obama and impeachment talk was just a “scam” ginned up by Democrats.

Pfeiffer noted that “five days before the government shutdown, the Speaker said there was no way we’d shut… the government down over health care. And then we did.” So, he said, the possibility should not be ruled out after Obama enacts executive actions “by the end of summer.”

“In the House of Representatives, John Boehner may have the gavel, but Ted Cruz has the power,” he said. “I think it would be foolish to discount the possibility.”

After former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin called for impeachment on the pages of Breitbart News, a majority of Republicans and a third of Americans favored impeachment. Palin said Obama’s lawlessness on illegal immigration was the tipping point because it decimates the prospects of American workers of all backgrounds and races, including legal immigrants.

Palin has said that the Founders intended impeachment to be the ultimate check against a lawless executive, and more Americans would be in favor of it if they realized that and Obama enacts more executive actions.

Palin, along with conservatives Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin, emphasized the foolishness of taking impeachment off the table while Obama is threatening to undermine the constitutional order. Andrew McCarthy, the former federal prosecutor and author of Faithless Execution: Building the Political Case for Obama’s Impeachment, has declared that even lawmakers in Congress do not understand what “high crimes and misdemeanors” actually means.

“Contrary to some less than informed opinion, ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ – the legal standard for impeachment – refers not to indictable criminal offenses but to profound breaches of the public trust by high-ranking officials,” McCarthy wrote in National Review. “Once the standard is understood, it becomes easy to see that the President and his underlings have committed numerous, readily provable impeachable offenses.”
