A man accused of hitting and killing a bicyclist while driving drunk — and continuing to drive after the cyclist flipped over his windshield and into the bed of his truck — had been in deportation proceedings since 2013.
According to Kentucky’s WUKY, Odilon Paz-Salvador had multiple prior DUI charges and was in deportation proceedings when he hit Lexington lawyer Mark Hinkel during an annual cycling event called the Horsey Hundred last Saturday.
Reports indicate Paz-Salvador had been drinking, speeding and was high on marijuana when he slammed into Hinkel — a partner at a local law firm, husband, father, grandfather and athletic director for Christ the King School — over the windshield and into the bed of his truck.
Paz-Salvador did not stop after he hit Hinkel, but instead continued driving for another three miles before police noticed Hinkel in the back of his truck and pulled Paz-Salvador over.
In a statement to WUKY, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) revealed that ICE had released Paz-Salvador on bond following a prior DUI conviction and that he was already in deportation proceedings.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) previously encountered Odilon Paz-Salvador in October 2012 at the Fayette County Detention Center following his arrest for drunken driving, for which he was later convicted. He was turned over to ICE June 17, 2013 and placed into removal proceedings; he was released from ICE custody eight days later after posting bond. Mr. Paz-Salvador’s deportation proceedings are currently pending in federal immigration court. ICE placed a detainer with Scott County Jail on Odilon Paz-Salvador on May 25, 2015 following his arrest on criminal charges.
