On August 15, KSTP reported that the Jimmy John’s sandwich shop in Edina, Minnesota, fired an employee who refused to serve a police officer who wanted to buy a sandwich.
According to KSTP, “the employee at the 84th and Normandale sandwich shop reportedly refused to serve the officer because the police department ticketed too many Jimmy John’s drivers.”
Inquisitr reports that the officer let Jimmy John’s know about the incident via Facebook. An in-house investigation was conducted and the employee was fired.
The owner of the Edina Jimmy John’s said he will offer “free sandwiches” to all officers in Edina’s Police Department “as a goodwill gesture to make up for the employee’s action.”
A similar incident occurred in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in May when a Virginia Beach police officer walked into an IHOP and was allegedly denied service. According to 10 WAVY, the officer’s family said he entered the restaurant and the hostess allegedly told him, “We don’t serve your kind,” at which point he walked out. News Channel 3 reported that an IHOP spokesman said the hostess never used that phrase. Rather, he said, “the hostess jokingly said they were closed.” He said everyone misunderstood what happened, that the waitress was actually “trying to make a joke.”
