Police have charged a Portland woman for slipping illegal drugs into tampons and attempting to pass them to her daughter in jail.
Authorities said that Elizabeth Kay Sparkman’s jailed daughter, Brandi Lynn Miller, had asked her mother to figure out ways to pass the drugs to her as she sat in jail on charges of identity theft.
Allegedly, the mother twice tried to smuggle drugs to her daughter by hiding the drugs in a clinic bathroom.
Investigators say that Sparkman, 53, hid the drugs inside the tampons and then hid those tampons behind a toilet in the bathroom of the East County Health Center in Gresham, OR, a clinic used by the jail system. Sparkman tried the same scheme at a second health center, police said.
Prosecutors say that the lastest scheme was uncovered when authorities listened in on phone conversations between Sparkman and her daughter.
The woman pleaded guilty to the smuggling attempts.
As part of her plea deal, Sparkman accepted a 30-day jail sentence and was admitted to an inpatient drug and alcohol program.
