Rep. Patrick Murphy, a Democratic challenger to Sen. Marco Rubio for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat, declares that he is an immigrant, even though he was born and raised in Florida.

Murphy made his comment during an interview with Fusion’s Jorge Ramos, as he spoke about the immigrant experience.

“That’s what makes this country so beautiful and so unique. You think of the Statue of Liberty, and all of us,” Murphy said. “I’m an immigrant. We’re all basically immigrants here, and you think about that beacon of hope, of opportunity, and Trump is tearing that apart.”

Murphy has refused to debate his Democratic primary rival, Alan Grayson, after allegations of domestic violence against him surfaced in the media. He says victims of domestic violence asked him not to even give Grayson a political platform.
