The Chicago Police Department says a robbery suspect is dead after allegedly approaching a “legal” gun owner, demanding property, and being shot in the head Monday evening.

The incident occurred “in the 5500 block of West Thomas” in South Side Austin.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the 23-year-old suspect was armed when he walked up to the 58-year-old “legal” gun owner and attempted to rob him. Police said the older man pulled out his gun and shot the suspect in the head.

The Chicago Tribune describes the older man as a “concealed carry holder.”

The suspect, identified as Shaquille Gales, was rushed to West Suburban Medical in Oak Park and pronounced dead.

On January 12, 2017, the New York Times claimed, “The grim truth is that concealed-carry permit holders are rarely involved in stopping crime.” On that very same say a concealed carry permit holder in Arizona used his gun to save the life of a state trooper who was being beaten on the side of Interstate 10.
