Police say a 23-year-old woman walking in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, shot a robber in the chest with a gun after he approached her in broad daylight.

The robber fell to the ground immediately.

According to News & Observer, police report that Morgan Matthews was walking on South Blount Street on Thursday when 28-year-old Jonathan Tyrone Peace approached her and attempted to rob her. Matthews reacted by shooting Peace in the chest.

Police say “Matthews fired her weapon to stop him from attacking her and stayed on the scene until police arrived.”

A witness called 911 to report a “confrontation” between two individuals, then quickly added, “Holy s***! Shots fired! The victim is down – one gunshot wound to the chest.”

Matthews’ boyfriend said she texted him after the incident saying, “I just shot someone.” He asked her to clarify and she said, “Come down here please. I just got attacked.”

Police said Peace’s injuries were not life-threatening. Fox 10 reports that he will face a charge of common law robbery.

Matthews had owned her gun for about a week before she shot Peace.
