The Republican National Committee (RNC) on Wednesday congratulated newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and urged Republicans to “unite” behind him moving forward.

Johnson, vice chairman of the House Republican conference, was elected as the 56th Speaker of the House in a unanimous vote among Republicans on Wednesday. This has not happened in over a decade, last occurring January 5, 2011, for former Speaker John Boehner. The final tally was 220 votes for Johnson and 209 for Democrat Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).

The RNC, via chair Ronna McDaniel, quickly congratulated the new speaker and urged the GOP to unite moving forward.

“Congratulations to the new Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson! In eight months, the Republican House Majority passed bills to lower energy costs, secure the border, defend parents’ rights, improve public safety, and more,” the RNC said in a statement.

“When Republicans come together, we deliver results, and that’s what we need to showcase ahead of 2024. We delivered this Majority to bring solutions to the American people,” the brief statement continued. “It’s time for Republicans to unite behind Speaker Johnson and get back to work.”

Republicans are already showing signs of unity — a welcomed response given the past few weeks of contention following former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) ousting.

Upon being nominated, Johnson received applause from his colleagues and even had the subtle support from former President Donald Trump, who on Wednesday offered his “strong SUGGESTION” to Republicans to “go with the leading candidate, Mike Johnson, & GET IT DONE, FAST!”
