The Kevin Grow story just continues to get better. The Pennsylvania high school senior who became an Internet sensation earlier this month is headed to the NBA. The 76ers have signed the Bensalem Owls star, who has Down syndrome, to a two-day contract.
Kevin served as team manager for Bensalem for four years. He played in practice but sat on the bench during games. Until the last two of his senior season, that is. That’s when he got his big chance. To say he shined would be a major understatement. Kevin came up with a free throw, a steal, and a lay-up in the first game. He then brought the house down in game two. Kevin hit four three-pointers in the Owls’ season finale. He was mobbed by his teammates at the buzzer.
Enter the 76ers. They’ve brought Kevin on board for two days. On Monday, he practiced with the team along with Evan Turner, his favorite player. On Tuesday it gets even better. Kevin will eat dinner with the pros. Then he’ll suit up in authentic Sixers gear and take the floor with the club. Kevin will even shoot around with the team. He will get his own locker. After watching pre-game warm-ups he’ll stand with the team during the National Anthem. Kevin will then take in Philadelphia’s game against the Cavs in some great seats. Nice move, Sixers.
Last year, the Detroit Pistons gave similar All-Star treatment to Down Syndrome player Owen Groesser. Then in middle school, Groesser’s basketball prowess went viral when he went on a three point spree that captivated the nation.
Many things are very wrong with sports today, but in recent years when it comes to these well deserving players, the NBA has gotten things very, very right.
