The NFL played its first game of the regular season on Thursday night, it also logged its first anthem protest of the regular season. Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters sat on the training table in protest, during the playing of the anthem.

Before the game, Peters posted a message to Twitter featuring his shoes and telling fans “If you see the potential for good, speak up. Don’t be Quiet:”

Author and retired U.S. Army Major Montgomery Granger criticized Peters for the action and urged a boycott of the NFL:

This is not the first time the Pro-Bowl player and 2015 Chiefs first round draft pick has waded into political waters.

Early in 2017 Peters offered to arrange legal aid for a Muslim who felt threatened by President Donald Trump’s temporary ban on immigration from a group of seven terror-torn nations.

Randy Olsen, an American who married an Iraqi citizen, put out a social media blast asking for help to get his wife’s family moved to the U.S. at the same time Trump issued his temporary moratorium on travel.

Later calling his efforts “mission accomplished,” the Chiefs player responded to the call to help Olsen find legal assistance.
