A high school football player from Pike County, Georgia, died on Sunday after suffering a devastating hit during a game on Friday.

The player, junior Dylan Thomas, suffered severe brain injuries on Friday and underwent several emergency surgeries to relieve pressure on his brain, but the efforts ultimately failed to save his life, according to Fox 5.

Several local businesses announced an effort to raise money for the family to help them with the expenses. Nearly $30,000 has already been raised.

Thomas was hit hard during the second quarter of the game, but according to his uncle, the teen was not struck down immediately. Instead, Thomas began to experience a loss of feeling in his arms and then succumbed to unconsciousness as he sat on the sidelines.

Many local citizens have come together to support the family. Many gathered on the school’s football field for a memorial to the fallen teen.
