Injured Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton asked security to bring him a young Saints fan’s little plastic dustpan, as if he was going to autograph it. But instead, Heisman Trophy winner threw the kid’s dustpan in the garbage.
Newton spent a few minutes trading barbs with some New Orleans Saints fans on Sunday as he sat on the sidelines nursing a shoulder injury.
According to reports, one young Saints fan was carrying a small dustpan, likely to taunt the Panthers for a “sweep.” Since the Saints had won their two previous match-ups. Newton apparently saw the thing and had security bring it over. Everyone thought he was going to sign it, but instead he tossed it in a garbage can on the sidelines to a chorus of boos, Daily Snark reported.
While laughing, Newton then added insult to injury as he threw other pieces of trash on top of the pan as the kid stood there in shocked disbelief.
Saints fans slammed Newton on Twitter for the incident:
Just one reason why I can’t stand Cam Newton. That was a KID trying to get him to sign his dustpan! Not only did he dump it in the trash can, he poured two different cans of liquids on top of it! @drewbrees @TheSaints @MBSuperdome @Panthers pic.twitter.com/i1dHxwYtX2

What a disgrace. Cam Newton claims to be a role model? This is disgusting. https://t.co/SaDsBOobju

Still, Newton had his supporters on social media, too:
I’m not a Cam Newton fan but perhaps this kid should’ve known Cam wasn’t going to sign a dustpan as a joke. Idk just me.
Don’t get mad when athletes don’t play along with a joke about being swept lol https://t.co/3Lj8B9hLZo

I’m a Saints fan and I do not like Cam Newton but this was rude trying to get him to sign a dustpan. Tacky tacky tacky. I don’t blame him one bit for trashing it. If someone did this to Drew Brees I’d be pissed!
