Russian Boxer Maxim Dadashev Dies After Suffering Brain Injury in the Ring

Russian Boxer Maxim Dadashev has died from the brain injuries he suffered in the ring four days ago.

The Friday fight was stopped when cornerman James “Buddy” McGirt opted to throw in the towel because he feared Dadashev was seriously injured. McGirt insisted that Dadashev was losing his grip because he was “getting hit with more and more clean shots as the fight went on.”

It was soon determined that Dadashev suffered brain swelling from his 11-round, July 17 loss to Subriel Matias. A day later he ended up in a critical care unit at Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center and was subjected to a two-hour brain surgery to stop bleeding of the brain.

Last Saturday, after the surgery, doctors claimed that they had halted the bleeding and that the swelling was starting to go down.

But now, four days after the fight, the 28-year-old Dadashev has died from his injuries.

Buddy McGirt confirmed that Dadashev died on Tuesday.

“It just makes you realize what type of sport we’re in, man,” the cornerman told ESPN. “He did everything right in training, no problems, no nothing. My mind is like really running crazy right now. Like, what could I have done differently? But at the end of the day, everything was fine [in training].”
