Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders may not be entirely well.
On Wednesday, the Browns announced that they would be benching starting quarterback Joe Flacco and starting rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel. As for Sanders? His status as the #3 quarterback remains unchanged.
After the announcement, reporters flocked to Sanders to ask him about the QB shakeup. Specifically, he was asked about his role on the team.
Sanders’ response was more than a little weird.
Miming is not a frequently used method of response during player interviews. Is Sanders going non-verbal here because he doesn’t want to criticize his own team for not starting him? Is he just pulling a prank?
One of those explanations or some combination of the two is correct. Regardless, however, teams that might be willing to give Sanders a shot as a starter will not regard his behavior as a positive example. One of the major criticisms of the former Colorado Buffaloes player is that he often clowns around too much, lacks seriousness in serious situations, and suffers from a general lack of maturity.
A mimed response to reporters on the day of a major quarterback change is unlikely to alter that narrative. In fact, it will give all a glimpse of one of the reasons – perhaps, one of the primary reasons – why head coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t feel comfortable naming Sanders the starter or even as backup.
