After a long day of debate and passionate public testimony from both sides, the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee has voted to recommend that the Texas Senate pass both SB 11, the “campus carry” bill, and SB 17, the “open carry” bill. Both bills now head to the full Texas Senate for consideration. The vote came just before 6:00 pm Central Time on Thursday.

An email message was sent to the entire faculty of the University of Texas at Austin on a university listserv Tuesday morning encouraging them to oppose a “campus carry” bill being considered by the Texas Senate, SB 11, which would allow those with permits to carry concealed handguns to also carry their guns on college campuses.

The push to put more good guys with guns in schools to dissuade and counter bad guys with guns has re-emerged and is expanding at the state level around the country.

Colorado state representative Patrick Neville (R-Castle Rock), a student at Columbine High School when the school was attacked in April 1999, is pushing legislation to allow teachers to be armed on campus for self-defense.

On January 23, the Tampa Bay Times reacted to campus carry legislation being considered in Florida by suggesting, having guns on campus for self-defense is “imprudent” and will not make campuses safer.

In January 2014, Breitbart News reported that 2013 had been “The Year of the Gun.” Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) didn’t intend it to be that way, but it emerged as the year gun control was defeated.
