HOUSTON, Texas – A message sent to the parents and students of the Houston Independent School District (ISD) warns of a threat of violence to the district. The message says the threat is similar in nature to those received by Los Angeles, New York and Miami school districts.
“At this time, we do not believe the threat is credible,” the district said in a voice message obtained by Breitbart Texas. “As a precautionary measure, law enforcement officers are currently conducting random sweeps of school district buildings to ensure student safety. We have notified surrounding law enforcement agencies and will have additional officers on patrol in the morning.”
The district asked parents and students to be vigilant on Thursday morning and to report any suspicious activity to police.
The district announced in the message that school will continue Thursday morning as scheduled.
Breitbart News provided extensive coverage on Monday of the threats that shut down the nation’s second largest school district. The Los Angeles Unified School District shut down all of its schools after receiving an electronic bomb threat. Fox News reported later in the day that the threat was determined to be a hoax.
The LA district superintendent, Ramon Cortines said the threat included the use of backpacks and was aimed “to not one school, but to many schools in this school district.” He assured parents that all of the schools would be searched by the end of the day on Tuesday.
Representative Brad Sherman said via HotAir that the threat came from a person claiming to be a radical Islamist. “The author claims to be an extremist Muslim who has teamed up with local jihadists,” Sherman said. “We do not know whether these claims are true or a lie. We do not know whether this email is from a devout Muslim who supports jihadists or perhaps a non-Muslim with a different agenda.”
Houston ISD said in its message that more information would be provided as it became available.
