Chris Hayes Drags MSNBC Ratings Into Toilet

Chris Hayes debuted his new, prime time MSNBC show, “All In,” in April. In theory, the show was poised to have a big debut as it rode the very busy news cycle with the hyper attention paid to the terror attacks in Boston and the fertilizer plant explosion in Waco, TX. Unfortunately for the NBC News cable outlet, that theory didn’t hold up, as viewers went out of their way to avoid Hayes and the rest of the prime time line-up.  

Hayes’ time slot, which had been the home of Ed Schultz’ “The Ed Show,” was down an astounding 18% in total viewers. More troubling for Hayes, who was brought in to appeal to younger viewers in the 25-54 demographic, “All In” finished in 4th place behind O’Reilly, Anderson Cooper, and CNNHLN’s Nancy Grace in that key demo.  

More troubling for MSNBC is the fact that “The Rachel Maddow Show,” the highest rated program on the cable network, was down 7% in April, possibly because the show is weakened by having Hayes as the new lead-in rather than Ed Schultz.
