The Ninth U. S. Circuit Court’s Chief Judge, Alex Kozinski has canceled next year’s scheduled meeting in Monterey, citing budget constraints. The cancellation comes in the wake of serious pressure from Republican Sens. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Jeff Sessions of Alabama over the Ninth Circuit’s extravagant plans for this year’s annual conference slated for Maui, Hawaii.

After making an initial inquiry, Sens Grassley and Sessions were not at all pleased with a “troubling response” from Kozinski.
In announcing the cancellation, Circuit Executive Cathy Catterson stated “We firmly believe in the importance of the conference in educating the federal bench and bar and in advancing governance of the circuit. But we also recognize the need to conserve financial resources during the present fiscal crisis.”
Unfortunately, their “firm” belief didn’t come until pressed by two Republican Senators, who doubled down after the Ninth Circuit at first offered an inadequate response. The offices of Sens. Grassley and Sessions were not available for comment at this time.
