House Republicans may refuse to go along with the budget deal worked out last night by the Senate. Eric Cantor, the majority leader, said he won’t go along with the Senate after he met with other House Republicans.
The miniscule spending cuts ordained by the Senate bill aren’t enough for some House Republicans, who assert that they will raise the amount of spending cuts. Some Republicans said they favor a ratio of $3 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax hikes for the upper tax echelon.
Rep. Steven LaTourette, (R-OH) said: “Our sense, at least in the House, was that a number of the Republicans who voted for it must have been drunk.”
President Barack Obama has already threatened to raise taxes in 2013 over and above whatever emerges from the deal presently negotiated. He took an opportunity yesterday to rip Congress for the delay while ignoring his own inactivity:
If there’s even one second left before you have to do what you’re supposed to do,” (members of Congress) “will use that last second.”
