Nancy Pelosi to Receive Planned Parenthood's Margaret Sanger Award

Planned Parenthood Federation of America has announced that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will receive its Margaret Sanger Award, the organization’s highest honor, at its annual gala event in Washington, D.C., on March 27th.

According to a press release, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards said, “No one is more deserving of this honor than Leader Pelosi, who has fought tirelessly throughout her career to protect and expand women’s access to health care.”

The award is extended to Pelosi “in recognition of her leadership, excellence, and outstanding contributions to the reproductive health and rights movement over the course of her career.”

Richards said:

As the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, Leader Pelosi recognized that women’s health is a mainstream issue impacting women and families. Her leadership in passing the Affordable Care Act and her ongoing commitment ensures that the promise of the law is realized for millions of women as the greatest advancement for women’s health in a generation.

Planned Parenthood said that Pelosi “joins the distinguished company of many previous Sanger Award winners,” including Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Alan Guttmacher, author of the Roe v. Wade decision Justice Harry Blackmun, Hillary Clinton, and executive director of the ACLU Anthony Romero.

Regarding Pelosi’s award, Catholic World News observed:

The Margaret Sanger Award, named from the notorious racist and eugenicist [who] helped to establish Planned Parenthood, recognizes a public figure for “outstanding contributions to the reproductive health and rights movement.” Nancy Pelosi, who identifies herself as a practicing Catholic, has campaigned tirelessly for unrestricted legal abortion.

As Breitbart News’s Ben Shapiro reported in June of last year, Pelosi criticized a bill prohibiting late-term abortions by referring to abortion as “sacred ground.”

“As a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground to me when we talk about this,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi has also promoted Planned Parenthood’s relationship with the Girl Scouts USA.

Early in 2012, Pelosi said the relationship between the two organizations is “very valuable.” Pelosi and a group of female government leaders attended a reception to promote the Girl Scout’s initiative “To Get Her There,” which sought to create “gender balanced leadership.”

In June of last year, Pelosi referred to abortion safety laws as an “assault” on “women’s health.”
