“In the year-ago period, it had lost 42,000 subscribers.”

TO ATTRACT YOUNGER MOVIEGOERS THEATRES CONSIDER ALLOWING TEXTING

“Over my dead body will I introduce texting into the movie theater,” he says. “I love the idea of playing around with a new concept. But that is the scourge of our industry. … It’s our job to understand that this is a sacred space and we have to teach manners.” He says it should be “magical” to come to the cinema. But Miles shot back that “one person’s opinion of magical isn’t the other’s.”

‘AVENGERS’ ALREADY BREAKING OVERSEAS BOX OFFICE RECORDS

Marvel and Disney have struck a gold mine with “The Avengers” and it’s poised to not only be a contender for top grossing film of the year, but it’s earning the love from critics and fans alike as well. The first 39 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes have the film averaging an 8.4/10 score for a 97% fresh rating and according to IMDB users, it’s already made it into the top 250 list from nearly 8000 votes (how many actually saw the film, we can’t say).

SPIKE LEE’S TROUBLED ‘RED HOOK SUMMER’ LANDS A DISTRIBUTOR

Not so shockingly, studios have been apprehensive about picking up the movie since its premiere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival?

—–FLASHBACK: Spike Lee Throws Hissy Fit at Sundance

—–THR: But Lee’s latest rambles through almost two hours of unfocused drama, burdened with endless didactic editorializing, before lurching out of nowhere into ugly revelations and violence.

—-LAT: The author James McBride, who wrote “Red Hook Summer” with Lee, had previously told Lee he didn’t believe the provocative scene involving the Bible and the sex act should have been included in this way.

TOP GUN’ SEQUEL TAKES FLIGHT

[Cruise] let the big news slip during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about a fifth “Mission: Impossible” film, stating, “We’ll likely make a “Top Gun” sequel with Tom Cruise first. Jerry Bruckheimer would produce, with Tony Scott returning to direct.”

Goodman adds, “All parties are moving ahead. We’ve hired Peter Craig to write the script.”

SONY PREVIEWS FIRST ‘SKYFALL’ TEASER TRAILER

It begins with an interrogation scene, possibly a psych evaluation of Bond as someone is doing a word association game with the agent. At first we hear it as narration over a couple of establishing shots of London, starting with “Country” to which Bond responds “England.” “Gun” is next, with the response being “Shot,” followed by “agent” and “provocateur,” and “murder” to which Bond replies “employment.” By then, we’re into the interrogation room and there are three people behind the glass looking on with Dame Judi Dench’s M and Ralph Fiennes’ Mallory being the most prominent, though we’re not sure who the third person was. (In hindsight, either that third person or the interrogator may have been Albert Finney’s character, but we’re not sure.) When the interrogator says “Skyfall,” Bond doesn’t respond so he says “Skyfall” again and Bond says “Done” and gets up to leave.”

FIRST OFFICIAL LOOK AT ‘DJANGO UNCHAINED’

Doesn’t Leonardo DiCaprio look great as a villain? That’s Leo as Calvin Candie, the slaver antagonist of Quentin Tarantino’s new film Django Unchained, in which the character is opposed by a German bounty hunter and a freed slave, played by Christoph Waltz and Jamie Foxx. That image is one of two fantastic official first looks at the characters; the other, featuring the heroes, is below.

Foxx tells EW that the movie will certainly be controversial, and describes Django as Shaft’s “Richard Roundtree meets Clint Eastwood.”

THE AGE OF INNOCENCE 3D’?

Scorsese said he also would have preferred to shoot some earlier film, such as 1976’s “Taxi Driver,” in 3D, though not his 1977 musical “New York, New York.”

THE TOP 10 BALLSIEST ‘SOUTH PARK’ EPISODES

The following aren’t necessarily the show’s ten best episodes, but a collection of those that represent the particular brand of South Park rebellion at its most pointed and offensive.

MOVIES BEAMED INTO THEATERS BY SATELLITE: EXHIBITION MEETS AGE OF TECHNOLOGY

Starting in the fall, instead of physically shipping out movies, studios will be able to digitally upload them via satellite, giving both themselves and the theater owners the flexibility to schedule or swap out movies and trailers.

The system is also about half the price of sending thousands of hard drives to theaters around the country.

This potential would expand on a current initiative in which live performances are streamed[.]

YES, MAD MAX 4 IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING

There seems to be A LOT of confusion on the ‘net (particularly among Chewers) about what in the word is going on with Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth installment in George Miller’s post-apocalyptic action saga.  That’s not surprising, given the sheer amount of problems that the project has had to overcome on its way to theaters.  It initially almost happened back in the late ’90s.  Mel Gibson was still on-board to return at that point and it was months away from happening when disaster struck. Turmoil in the region it was scheduled to shoot in (somewhere in Africa, I believe) halted the production, and both Miller and Gibson moved on to other things.  All seemed lost.
