Ferrell Returns to SNL: Get Ready, Bush!

Will Ferrell is going to return to “Saturday Night Live” May 12. There should be no doubt that somehow, some way, he’ll mock President Bush; he’s made a career out of it.

Ferrell genuinely dislikes the former president; he declined the offer to meet him personally while other “SNL” stars, like Dana Carvey, famously met and laughed with the presidents they mimicked.

In February 2009, just after President Barack Obama took office, Ferrell starred in “You’re Welcome America: A Final Night with George Bush” on Broadway. And of course, the denizens of the liberal media loved it.

Patrick Healy of the New York Times wrote, “And who better than liberal New York theatergoers, they (Ferrell and co-writer and director Adam McKay) hoped, to appreciate a cutting post-mortem on the Republican president?” Joe Dziemianowicz of the New York Daily News agreed: “Unlike Dubya, Ferrell is lightning fast on his feet and turns each ad lib into a burst of hilarity, a mission accomplished, if you will.” And Michael Kuchwara of AP wrote: “As a thinker, Ferrell is a lot faster with a quip than the bumbler he is impersonating.”

After Osama Bin Laden was killed, Ferrell made a video in which, as Bush, he appeared from a Sizzler steak house in Texas, happily reporting that he had personally overseen a “strategic and covert operation,” killing a gopher that had been terrorizing his backyard and tearing up his lawn.

Ferrell’s Bush then calls it a “good day for America” but says the day would be even better if Sizzler had a taco bar. After hearing about Bin Laden’s killing, he says that the news is “two good things for America” and then leaves to find some tacos.

“Saturday Night Live” has been a font of anti-Republican sentiment since Chevy Chase lampooned Gerald Ford. In the pantheon of great scams, there must be a place for someone like Ferrell who is able to milk one sophomoric imitation for so long successfully.
