California on Hold as Mexico Plays Netherlands
Life on Sunday will be slower--and more tense--than usual, as Mexico faces the Netherlands in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific time on Sunday. The match will take place at Fortaleza, in northeast Brazil, and will feature two of the strongest teams in the tournament. The Netherlands were dominant in Group B, winning all three of their matches, while Mexico's only Group A draw came against hosts Brazil.
Though the U.S. team has drawn considerably more interest in California and nationwide than in previous years, the Mexican team has a strong local following in the Golden State. Last week, rowdy Mexican fans took to the streets of Los Angeles following the Mexican team's victory over Croatia, which sealed its qualification for the knockout stage. Police in some L.A. County communities are already closing streets in anticipation.
Oddsmakers favor the Netherlands slightly in the match. The Netherlands were runners-up in the 2010 final.
