182 Migrants Rescued Off Greece

Athens, August 29 (QNA) – Greece’s coast guard said Friday that 182 migrants had been rescued off the Greek coast in the Aegean Sea in the past 24 hours.

The coast guard said a wooden vessel with 138 migrants ran aground on an islet near the island of Symi. The migrants were transferred to the island’s main port.

Another 44 migrants and two alleged traffickers were also intercepted on Friday in separate incidents on the islands of Samos and Rhodes, dpa reported.

Greece is a key entry point to the European Union for migrants from Asia and Africa. The country has registered more than 1 million arrivals during the past decade.

Many of the recent arrivals are escaping civil war in Syria.(QNA)
