After announcing that he was retiring from the NFL on Friday, former Minnesota Vikings Punter Chris Kluwe said he may sue the Vikings for “workplace discrimination.”
In an interview with USA Today on Friday, Kluwe said, “I don’t plan to” to sue the Vikings “unless things go horribly wrong.”
He said, “it’s a good sign they’ve appointed an independent investigation, and I think if the independent investigation talks to everyone and gets the accounts from everyone, they’ll conclude that, yeah, this is what happened.”
“If that turns out to not be the case, then a workplace discrimination suit is always an option,” he said. “But again, I would really prefer not to do that, because I had a great time with that organization. I have friends who are still in the organization. I got along with 99 percent of the people in the organization.”
On Thursday, Kluwe, the vocal advocate of gay marriage, published an article in Deadspin in which he accused his special teams coach Mike Priefer of homophobia and anti-gay comments. Kluwe said he was “confident” that he was fired because of his outspoken views about gay marriage, with which Priefer disagreed. Priefer has since issued a statement “vehemently” denying Kluwe’s allegations.
On Friday, the Minnesota Vikings announced they would conduct an independent review of Kluwe’s allegations.
