What to do if you’re a Cleveland Cavaliers fan? Now that home-town hero LeBron James is returning to the team all the Lebron jerseys at the NBA store are selling out, according to bleacherreport.com. ESPN’s Darren Rovell tweeted on Saturday, “The @NBA Store says it has now sold out of LeBron replica Cavs home, away & alternate jerseys.”
To make matters worse for Cavs fans, which jersey do you buy, #6 or #23? James himself can’t seem to make up his mind. He asked on Instagram on Friday, “6 or 23?”
James wore #23 from the time he was in his sophomore year in high school through his last season with the Cavs, in 2009-10, then changed to #6 when he joined the Miami Heat, in deference to Michael Jordan. He said at the time:
I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized in some way – soon. If you see 23, you think about Michael Jordan. You see guys flying through the air, you think about Michael Jordan. You see game-winning shots, you think about Michael Jordan. You see fly kicks, you think about Michael Jordan. He did so much, it has to be recognized, and not just by putting him in the Hall of Fame.
Now that Harris Interactive has anointed him the most popular athlete in sports, surpassing Jordan (after being rated #2 behind him last year), there’s no telling how many jerseys he will sell. And as Rovell writes, those who haven’t already bought a jersey may be shelling out big bucks soon. New jerseys may cost as much as $300.
The new attitude of Cavs fans is a kaleidoscopic shift from the days of James jersey burnings in 2010, when James left the team for Miami.
