Obama Plans Visit to Kenya in July

President Obama has scheduled a visit to Kenya in July, according to a statement from the White House, for this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Summit.

The summit is part of Obama’s goal to increase business ties between the United States and Muslim countries, first announced in his Cairo speech in 2009.

Kenya is hosting the summit this year, which in past years has been hosted by Turkey, The United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, and Morocco.

According to the announcement, Obama’s trip will “continue our efforts to work with countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya, to accelerate economic growth, strengthen democratic institutions, and improve security.”

Obama has visited Africa three times previously, but so far he has avoided a visit to his father’s birthplace.

In 2013, Obama vowed during a visit to Africa that he would visit the country before he left office.

“If in three years and seven months I am not in Kenya, then you can fault me for not following through on my promise,” he said.
