Homeowner Ends ‘String of Home Invasions’ with One Shot

A homeowner in Miami ended a “string of home invasions” by confronting the invasion suspect and shooting him in the abdomen.

The incident occurred Tuesday around 6:30 a.m.

WSVN reports Miami Police Officer Yelitza Cedano said the dispatcher “received a call from a female saying that there was an attempted burglary at her home and that her boyfriend had apparently shot the offender.” Cedano said the couple was asleep and awoke to the sound of their home alarm, which actually went off twice.

When the alarm first sounded, the couple thought it was “routine,” but when it sounded for a second time the male homeowner grabbed a gun and went to investigate.

Cedano said the homeowner went outside and caught the suspect “off guard.” He “shot [the suspect] outside of the home, alongside of the house, possibly in the alleyway.”

The suspect was identified as 47-year-old Dennis Harris. He was reportedly holding “bolt cutters in his hands” at the time that he was shot. CBS4’s Marybel Rodriguez reports that the same suspect has allegedly “broken into homes in the area multiple times.”

Harris was taken to Ryder Trauma Center, where doctors operated on him and he is expected to survive.

Neighbors voiced support for the homeowner’s actions. Resident Rachel Straub said, “As a woman, I’m really grateful that people take action to stop violence, ’cause this is a violent action,”
