Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels has heard the complains that his sketch comedy show lacks diversity. Now, it appears that the Mark Twain Prize winner is doing something about it.
Michaels secretly auditioned a group of black female comics recently, apparently to eventually broaden the racial makeup of his mostly white cast.
The NBC show directly addressed the issue earlier this season when black actress Kerry Washington hosted the program.
News of the secret audition leaked when several comics who performed for Michaels at Los Angeles’s Groundlings Theatre shared the news via social media.
The comediennes reportedly auditioned in front of a live audience, and according to [Bresha] Webb, were “very supportive of each other and there was no sense of competition or pettiness. We were just happy that some new black women in comedy were being considered and given a shot. We even held hands prayed after the showcase. It was refreshing.
