James Cameron Hints 'Avatar' Sequels to Bring More Eco-Messages

James Cameron’s Avatar thrilled crowds with its intense action and groundbreaking special effects. You didn’t need those 3-D glasses to see the eco-messages careening off the screen, though.

Cameron, who once said he “loves eco-terrorism,” used the film as a cinematic soap box to speak about the environment.

Now, Cameron is suggesting the sequels to his box office bonanza also will let him speak his mind on world events.

There’s nothing I need to say as an artist about the state of the world and human affairs that I can’t do through the lens of the ‘Avatar’ universe,” he says. “We’ve had a couple of years to think through the story arc of the next three films, and every day that goes by, I believe in the stories I’m telling more and more. We’re not coming out of the block fast to capitalize on the last film.

The first of several Avatar sequels hits theaters Dec. 2016.
