Blake Shelton Apologizes for ‘Homophobic’ Tweets

Blake Shelton has apologized after Twitter messages the singer allegedly sent years ago resurfaced this week, causing some social media users to accuse the country music star of being “extremely homophobic.”

“Everyone knows comedy has been a major part of my career and it’s always been out there for anyone to see,” Shelton wrote in a Twitter statement on Wednesday. “That said anyone that knows me also knows I have no tolerance for hate of any kind of form.”

“Can my humor at times be inappropriate and immature? Yes. Hateful? Never,” The Voice co-host continued. “That said I deeply apologize to anybody who may have been offended.”

Over the weekend, social media users reported several tweets Shelton purportedly sent years ago.

“Grown men who wear skinny jeans may as well write on the side of their car ‘I’m only staring at your boobs cause I’m jealous of them!!'” read one tweet from 2012, according to Fox News.

Shelton’s apology came after he took to Twitter and called his detractors “dumb asses,” in a now-deleted tweet.

“Ha! Reading all my anti-gay hate tweets… Ha! Ha! If people only knew even a little about me, my family and friends. Dumb asses,” Shelton tweeted, DailyMail reports.

The Saving Country Music blog claims that more than 10,000 of Shelton’s tweets have been deleted from his personal Twitter page.

Shelton, who has been a featured talent coach on NBC’s The Voice since 2011, is set to return for a new season of the program on August 21.
