Hillary Clinton’s State Department, still eager to gloss over their failure in Benghazi by downplaying the Islamist threat there, reiterated a previous travel advisory to Americans in Libya on Thursday, while Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands warned their citizens to evacuate the city because of an “imminent and specific” threat.
The European countries were clear that they had discovered an imminent threat against Westerners; the British government revealed that al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the terrorist group responsible for the attack that killed 37 Westerners in Algeria last week, is connected to the latest threats.
AQIM’s sister organization, Ansar Al-Sharia, which was responsible for the September 11th attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, may also be connected to the threat.
Clinton’s State Department minimized the importance of the threat, saying there was “no specific information pointing to specific, imminent threats against U.S. citizens.”
Officials would only go so far as to say, “Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.”
French doctors in Benghazi hospitals have left the city, and the French cultural center has shut down.
