The NHL’S New York Islanders have agreed to move to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in 2015, after their lease at the antiquated Nassau Coliseum on Long Island expires.
“It was our goal from day one to keep the Islanders in the local New York area,” owner Charles Wang said. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to play in Barclays Center, a first class arena.”
Wang said the New York Islanders’ name and logo will remain the same when they make the move to the $1 billion Barclays Center.
The state-of-the-art arena will be the home this season of the NBA’s Nets, who are moving to the New York borough of Brooklyn from New Jersey.
The arena, which opened last month, will hold 14,500 for ice hockey.
Last Saturday it hosted the first boxing card in Brooklyn since 1931.
New York’s other NHL team, the Rangers, play at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan.
