Soldier dies in British hospital after Afghan attack

A British soldier died in hospital on Wednesday after he was injured by “enemy action” in Afghanistan, Britain’s Ministry of Defence said.

“The soldier was serving in the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand Province when he was injured as a result of enemy action on 14 January,” the ministry said in a statement.

He was flown back to Britain for treatment at the specialist Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, central England, where he died of his wounds, the ministry added, stressing that his family has been informed.

He is the second British soldier to die in Afghanistan this year after a member of a British engineering regiment was shot dead by an Afghan soldier last week in the latest “insider attack” on NATO troops.

The international force is training Afghan police and soldiers to take over security in the war-torn country ahead of its planned withdrawal in 2014.

A total of 440 British personnel have died in Afghanistan since the start of 2001.
