US firm to take over search and rescue operations: report

US-based transport company Bristow Group is to take over the country’s helicopter search and rescue operations, it was reported.

The government has awarded the contract to the Texas firm, ending 70 years of search and rescue operations by the RAF and Royal Navy, Sky News reported on Monday

The announcement will be made before the London stock market opens Tuesday, sources told the news channel.

A Department for Transport spokesman confirmed: “We are due to make an announcement soon.”

The contract is believed to be valued at around £3 billion.
