Green steps down as Rangers consultant

Controversial former Rangers chief executive Charles Green is to stand down as a paid consultant at the Scottish club, investors revealed on Tuesday.

The Glasgow giants’ board were due to meet later on Tuesday to discuss plans to dismiss the English businessman, who only took up the role on August 2.

However, he has taken pre-emptive action by voluntarily stepping down, and has given Rangers investor Sandy Easdale first refusal on his 7.7 percent stake in the club.

“Charles Green has given first refusal of his shares to Sandy Easdale as he promised,” said a spokesman for Easdale, in a statement released to Britain’s Press Association.

“Sandy may take all or some of the shareholding depending on the strategic requirements of other potential investors.”

Green led the acquisition of Rangers’ business and assets by a group of investors after the club went into liquidation last year and reformed the 54-time national champions as a new company in the Scottish fourth tier.

However, after a turbulent spell as chief executive, he resigned in April amid allegations of links to former Rangers owner Craig Whyte.

He was also fined by the Scottish Football Association (SFA) over alleged racist remarks about former club director Imran Ahmad that he made in a newspaper interview.

Green returned to Rangers three weeks ago but was described as an “embarrassment” by manager Ally McCoist after declaring that the club had to win one of the domestic cups this season.

Rangers began the current season in League One, the third tier of the Scottish league system.
