Police patrol Birmingham buses after girl killed

Extra police officers patrolled buses and trains in Birmingham Friday after a 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death on her way to school.

The move, designed to reassure commuters, came as West Midlands Police revealed she had been killed by a single stab wound to the chest.

Police are also urging other people who were travelling on the bus with her to come forward urgently.

There were around 16 people on the number 9 bus on the Hagley Road when the incident occurred on Thursday morning at 7.37am but only about half have so far had spoken to police.

Detective Superintendent Richard Baker of West Midlands Police said: “Some of these passengers were sitting downstairs on the bus and they haven’t yet spoken to police. They may not even have known what happened but may have vital evidence…

“Yesterday’s events were truly tragic and it’s extremely important everyone comes forward and speaks to us.”

He added: “Extra police officers will be patrolling public transport this morning in the wake of yesterday’s tragedy to reassure commuters.”

A 22-year-old man remains in custody Friday.

The stabbing came a month after the schoolgirl, described as “bright and popular” by her school, voiced concerns about a fellow passenger on another bus journey.

On February 8 she told friends on Twitter: “This man is worrying me on the bus keeps getting up and walking up and down stairs, and sitting in different place.”
