Drifts hamper efforts to restore power

Engineers battled to restore power after severe weather turned off the lights in thousands of homes across the country.

Up to 10,000 properties in Scotland, 7,000 in Northern Ireland and more than 200 in northwest England suffered power outages, while engineers were hampered by drifts of snow up to 18 feet high.

Meanwhile, police named a 25-year-old whose body was found in a snow drift on Saturday near Burnley as Gary Windle.

Villages near the Lancashire town were “running out of food” after being cut off, according to local police.

The Met Office has issued a yellow ice warning stretching from London, across north Wales, northern England and southern Scotland.

It warns that existing snow will melt on roads and pavements during the day, before refreezing to give icy patches at night.

Some parts of eastern England are forecast to receive further snowfall of up to two inches over the next 24 hours.
