Couple face jail over fire which killed six children

A couple face lengthy jail terms Wednesday over the killing of their six children in a fire which they started deliberately at the family home.

Mick Philpott 56, and his 32-year-old wife Mairead were convicted of the manslaughter of the six children in the house fire in Derby last May.

Nottingham Crown Court heard the couple had set their home ablaze in a bid to frame Mick Philpott’s 29-year-old former girlfriend Lisa Willis.

She had shared the house with the couple before leaving three months earlier, triggering a custody battle.

He was supposed to have rescued the children through a bedroom window, but the petrol-fuelled fire was far greater than he expected and the window would not open.

All six children — Duwayne, Jade, John, Jack, Jesse and Jayden, aged from five to 13 — died from smoke inhalation.

Co-defendant Paul Mosley, 46, a friend of the couple, was also convicted of manslaughter.

Unemployed Philpott was nicknamed “Shameless Mick” in the media due to his lifestyle, which included fathering 17 children.

He has appeared on television on The Jeremy Kyle Show and in a documentary about welfare with Conservative former minister Ann Widdecombe.
