The Colombian government has the full support of the United States as its representatives sit down in Oslo to negotiate peace with leftist guerrillas, the State Department said Wednesday.
Colombian government representatives and leftist FARC rebels have arrived in Oslo ahead of peace talks aimed at ending the longest-running conflict in Latin America set to get under way in the Norwegian capital on Thursday.
“We’re very… supportive of their effort to get to the peace that they deserve,” said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.
“We’re obviously not involved, we’re not in the middle of it,” Nuland told reporters. “But we are being briefed regularly by the Colombians.”
When peace talks were announced in early September, US President Barack Obama congratulated Colombian counterpart Juan Manuel Santos for demonstrating “an unwavering commitment to seeking a durable peace and ensuring a better life for all Colombians through its security and social inclusion policies.”
