Taiwan's exports in August up 3.6 percent

Taiwan’s exports in August rose 3.6 percent from a year earlier to $25.64 billion on increased demand from China for petrochemicals and electronic products, the government said Monday.

Exports to the island’s leading overseas market China, including Hong Kong, totalled $10.3 billion, up 2.9 percent year-on-year, the finance ministry said in a statement.

Petrochemical shipments to China rose 28.1 percent from a year earlier while sales of electronic products to the mainland picked up 8.6 percent, it said.

Exports to the United States were 0.9 percent higher year-on-year while shipments to Europe and Southeast Asia rose 4.0 percent and 2.9 percent, respectively.

The government last month revised its expectations for 2013 full year economic growth downwards to 2.31 percent, citing a weaker global economic outlook and slowing exports and consumer spending in the second half.

Taiwan’s economy grew 1.32 percent in 2012, its slowest pace in three years.
