Mizdirection wins Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint

Mizdirection won the 6.5-furlong, $1 million Turf Sprint on Saturday, one of nine races on the second day of the 15-race, $25 million Breeders’ Cup championships at Santa Anita.

The filly, trained by Mike Puype, hadn’t raced since May, but with Mike Smith aboard she ran down the pace-setters to win by half a length from Unbridled’s Note. Reneezgotzip was third.

Mizdirection, 20-1 on the morning line, was backed to 9-2 and gave Smith a 17th Breeders’ Cup triumph, extending the record he established on Friday with a victory aboard Royal Delta in the Ladies’ Classic.

Starspangledbanner, saddled by Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien, shot to the front on the opening downhill stretch under jockey Joseph O’Brien but faded in the final straight.
