Yazid Atouba, a 20-year-old midfielder who helped Cameroon reach the last 16 of the 2011 world junior championships, has signed with Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire, the club announced on Friday.
The left-footer, who last played for Rainbow Bamenda in his homeland, scored goals against Columbus and Chivas USA in MLS pre-season matches, prompting the Fire to offer him a contract on the eve of the US league’s 2013 season opener.
“We’re pleased to add Yazid to our roster,” Fire soccer operations president Javier Leon said. “He is a quick, skillful player with tremendous potential. Throughout pre-season he has shown that he has the talent to succeed in MLS.”
The Fire will open the season Sunday in Los Angeles against the two-time defending MLS champion Galaxy.
