Bills Hall of famer Kelly has treatable jaw cancer

Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly, a Hall of Fame quarterback who played in four consecutive Super Bowls, revealed on Monday that he has a treatable form of cancer in his upper jaw.

The 53-year-old issued a statement through the Buffalo Bills, saying he was diagnosed with cancer but that it has not spread to other parts of his body and that he will undergo surgery on Friday.

“This past couple of weeks has been difficult for me,” said Kelly, whose number 12 shirt is the only one to have been retired by the franchise in its’ history.

“I was recently diagnosed with Squamous-cell carcinoma of the upper jaw bone… doctors have told me that the prognosis for my recovery is very good.”

“With the excellent medical care that I will be receiving and the loving care of my wife Jill and my daughters Erin and Camryn and the support of my entire family and friends, I am extremely confident in my road to recovery.”

Kelly spent his entire National Football League career with the Bills from 1986-1996, guiding Buffalo to the Super Bowl from 1991 through 1994, where the Bills lost to the New York Giants, Washington and twice to Dallas.

Kelly was inducted into the American Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
