Kiwis down Oracle in 5th-race rout

Team New Zealand routed Oracle Team USA in the fifth race of the America’s Cup Tuesday to edge closer to yachting’s coveted prize.

Shortly after the Kiwi’s runaway win, Oracle opted to use their “provisional card” which allows each team one chance to call for a postponement of a race.

That means race six will be pushed back from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday.

The Kiwi’s fourth victory of the series leaves them needing five more to seize the Cup from holders Oracle.

The Americans led rounding each of the first two marks, but once again New Zealand seized the lead on the third leg of the five-leg race on San Francisco Bay and went on to win by 1min 5sec.

“It’s a tough way to win races, but it’s working for us,” said New Zealand skipper Dean Barker.

Oracle began the finals two points adrift after a pre-regatta penalty, and have won just one race, leaving them stuck on minus one and still needing 10 more wins to retain the Cup.
