A man has been arrested after two men were stabbed to death in Birmingham on Friday night, police said.
The men, who are believed to be in their 40s, were stabbed in the city centre just before 6:00 pm.
West Midlands Police said one of the victims was stabbed outside a Sainsbury’s store on Martineau Place while the other was found outside Boots on Union Street.
West Midlands Ambulance Service said its crews arrived at the scene to find the two men being given first aid by police officers and members of the public.
“Both men went into cardiac arrest,” a spokeswoman said.
“Crews and the team of medics administered advanced life support to both men but sadly, despite the best efforts, nothing could be done to save them.”
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
A man was arrested on New Street, also in central Birmingham, shortly after the attacks.
“Two men have suffered fatal injuries — these have been inflicted in the heart of the city at a busy time when workers and shoppers would be heading home,” said Inspector David Keen.
“There are potentially hundreds of witnesses, either people who saw the stabbings or the offender leaving the scene, and I’d urge people to get in touch immediately — they could have vital information.”
He added that a large number of officers had arrived quickly on the scene.
