Tropical storm Ingrid becomes hurricane: US forecasters

Tropical storm Ingrid strengthened and became a hurricane on Saturday, US forecasters said, with authorities in Mexico making emergency plans ahead of its making landfall.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center said in a 2100 GMT bulletin that Ingrid was packing maximum sustained winds of 75 miles (125 kilometers) per hour, and was headed northward at seven miles (11 kilometers) per hour. Ingrid was located 195 miles (315 kilometers) east of Tuxpan, off Mexico’s Gulf Coast.
