A convoy of cartel gunmen carrying rifles and machetes stormed a juvenile prison in the border state of Tamaulipas and broke out five underage teenagers.
The raid took place in the rural community of Guemez earlier this week, where according to information provided to Breitbart Texas by the Tamaulipas government, the gunmen managed to assault an subdue the prison guards. Once the gunmen had control of the prison they rescued five teenage inmates before fleeing the area.
Authorities have identified the teen fugitives as Pablo César Guajardo Alvarez, Margarito Monreal Almazán, Jorge Antonio Barrientos Coronado, Uriel Didier Gutiérrez Pérez y Olegario García Ramírez. The teenagers were housed at the detention center on a variety of charges.
While the charges of the teenage inmates were not readily available, in recent years drug cartels like Los Zetas and the Gulf Cartel have heavily recruited teenagers as lookouts, smugglers and foot soldiers. Breitbart Texas previously reported on the kidnapping and beheading of a used car salesman in Ciudad Victoria. Most recently the Tamaulipas government announced the arrest of four individuals tied to that crime, one of the gunmen in that case was a 17-year-old teenager whose name was not released as per Mexican law because he is a minor.
Guemez is not far from the Tamaulipas capital of Ciudad Victoria, which as reported by Breitbart Texas, has been ground zero for a fierce civil war between rival factions of the Los Zetas Cartel. The faction known as Vieja Escuela and their allies Grupo Bravo have hung out numerous banners and carried out a series of gory executions that include beheadings and dismemberments as they try to wrestle control of the city from Cartel Del Noreste (CDN) which is the Zeta faction that holds the city with an iron grip.
The constantly increasing level of violence has caused panic among the local residents despite the many assurances regularly given by the Tamaulipas government that violence in the region is decreasing.
